What are future prospects for a person from a non-Computer Science background who takes up an IT job?

More and more IT companies are opening up positions for engineering students from IITs having a non-Computer Science background who have a good grip on programming fundamentals. If such a person takes such a job, then what are the future prospects for him in the IT field, given that he does not have a degree in computer science ? Will he ever be able to switch back to his original engineering field ?

Prospects in IT filed are good. I have worked with several programmers or IT people who did not study computer science and doing well. Will you be able to switch back ? Well yes, apply for new jobs and when they ask why you want to leave IT tell them the truth.
