Why is dry firing bad for an airsoft gun?

I heard that if dry firing (shooting with no ammo in the gun) is bad, but why?

there is nothing stopping the pressure (no resistance to the piston) so it fires harder and with more impact. This causes it 5 times damage per shot or something. Its like the difference between having suspension on your car or just solid bars.
