What to do after submitting application?

If I wanted to land a job as an independent Content Quality Editor at Quora, what steps could I take to deliver a really hard-hitting application beyond simply submitting my application on the site?

  • I'm driven and passionate about building up the Quora community, and want to put my writing skills to their best use with Quora in a position as an ICQE. What type of epic feat could I undertake to make the recruiting department at Quora look twice at my application, if scale or time involved were of no concern?

  • Answer:

The fastest way to get a recruiter to respond to your application is by getting a referral from a Quora employee. It took the recruiter less than an hour to respond to my email, but even with a referral, you would still have to go through the process of filling out two forms. The first form is just basic questions such as salary expectation, starting date, availability for interview, etc... The second form is an editing and topics assessment test which consists of 20 questions to edit and assign topic categories to. I didn't make it to the interview stage, but it seemed like they weigh very heavily on the assessment test and the recruiter was unable to give me further feedback or examples of what they consider as "strong edits". If possible, reach out to Quora employees/contractors on LinkedIn and ask if they could give you a referral. You should also be active on Quora, become a volunteer editor, there may be a possibility that Quora will reach out to you with a reviewer position. Good luck!

A few wild guesses (some of which may be applicable to jobs in general): Quantitatively, work on your numbers.  17 questions, 29 answers, 195 edits (at the time I'm typing this) is a start, but there are people on here with numbers thirty, fifty, a hundred times those.  If someone at Quora asks what makes you think you'd be good at it, it'll help to be able to point at your numbers - especially the "edits" one, I'd guess? Qualitatively, don't just have lots of questions and answers, but have good ones, to the point that you get recognized, at least once, as a Quora Top Writer.  Why?  Because being recognized by a company as really good at doing something as a hobby is a big foot in the door when it comes to doing something similar at that company for pay. Experientially, think about the things they don't say outright, that can be read between the lines, like interplay between their stated requirements. If they want experience editing and an understanding of localization and linguistics, it could be good to have experience editing English written by native English speakers from both Europe and Asia, as well as by people who have English as a second (or third, etc) language.
