    Why are you bringing the cable box into it? They have nothing to do with one another.Connect it to the AV inputs on the TV & forget about the cable box unless you're watching it.

Just connect your VCR directly into you television inputs. There is no reason to use your cable box as a middleman anymore. You used to have to do that back in the day, but that is no longer the case. Just plug in your VCR using the white, red, and yellow cables into the back of your TV. By the way, don't use a DVD player anymore if you have an HDTV, that is pointless. Get a Bluray player for hdtvs. They will play your dvd's as well as Blurays. Just use your VCR/DVD combo for VHS cassettes.

Why would you run that through your cable box ? Just connect it directly to another input on your TV, and when you want to watch something from the VCR/DVD, just switch the TV to that input.
