I have not heard anything about firm ware update for PS3 to make it able to play the 3D movies. It requires a new 3D blu ray disc player. PS3 does support 1080P, which is a standard blu ray disc movie. Keep in mind that there are only 25 3D movies in the market today and they are limited to animated movies. The new ones coming out will be tied in to a purchase of a 3D tv and player only from either Panasonic, Samsung or sony. You will not be able to buy the movie separately. The new 1.4 HDMI is capable of the return audio on 3D movies and internet connections. Also available on some new receivers. Hope this will help you out.
