What can I do with an Associates Degree in Accounting?

  • Hi, I am considering moving my hours from full time to part time and enrolling in our community college. I am interested in accounting since I am good at math and I love math as well. ...show more

  • Answer:

Technically speaking, anyone who works in any sort of accounting function can be considered an accountant, but to be a CPA, you'll have to get a bachelor's degree in order to take the exam. An associates is fine for a small business and will net you accounting assistant/bookkeeper type jobs or functions in AR/AP or payroll. Before you jump into accounting, I'ld suggest you take a look at the numerous career resources out there. Accounting is one of the more desired fields, so there's a ton of info. You should also make an appointment with an advisor at your community college and go over what your options are and see if you really do like accounting. A word of warning, though: if you're choosing accounting because you like math, you may be disappointed. Math and accounting are completely different. The highest level of math you need for accounting is basic arithmetic. It' s much more about concepts and problem-solving.

People with associates degrees in accounting get hired to be book keepers, accounts receivables, and accounts payables. But full accountant jobs are for people with bachelors degrees. That said, if you were employed as a book keeper for a small business, you'd have a lot of responsibility. It may be worth looking into. No matter what, an associates is a very good place to start. You could get your AS in accounting, get a job, and work for a while. Then, if you want to advance, go back to school and get your BS in accounting. No matter what you chose - an AS or a BS - I'd like you to try to get some real world related accounting experience on your resume. You can do this via internships, part-time jobs, or volunteer work. But having this sort of actual accounting related work for your resume will make it a lot easier to get a job in the field once you graduate.

You need to get certified as a CPA before you can practice accounting...you likely won't get hired without it. I wouldn't let anyone without experience be responsible for balancing my books, so you may need to look into an assistant position.

Well with my experience... nothing.

you can work in buisness in bookkeeping, you won't be able to be a CPA, but if you slect your school right, you can transfer to a full accounting program, and complete a BA degree
