    For a three night stay at a moderate-price hotel, I usually leave somewhere between $10 and $20, depending upon the service. The least I leave is $2 for a one-night stay where I had no direct service from house-keeping.

I would put a twenty directly into your maid's hand. That way it goes to HER and not into a pot nor to the wrong person who happens to find the tip in the room. Also, leaving a tip loose in the room is not good for maids because they must think, "Is that for me? Is it lost? Is it a test from management?" Put it in her hand.
