Answer:
Check with LL Bean, Eddie Bauer or Eastern Mountain Sports websites for good backpacks. Travel as light as possible. Do not carry more than 20 kilos. Most important are you r shoes. You need to have sturdy, hard soled boots that have been broken in before you set out.

One thing is for sure going to see northern europe requires a raincoat, you never know how the weather is going to be. it could be really good 80*F and sunshine or really poor 60*F rain and wind. ( bet on the later and be pleassently suppriced ) Now for places to visit in Sweeden the skærgaard is beautifull ( lots of islands ) And then there is Copenhagen that city is really nice ( thats Denmark) go se a place called Christiania its quite special. and if you are in Denmark they have this place caled møhns klint only 50miles from copenhagen its beautifull ( just google it ) Besides that there is Norway... its worth a visit beautyfull nature again but its up north and the opposite way of rome. Anyway about your question about backpacks.... I would say go find a medium size the fasillities for backpacking in most of europe is really good. I would recommend for you to bring: Garbage bags ( littering fines is minimum $100 ) Raincoat Good boots for hiking. And I personally always bring a small bottle of rubbing alcohol when traveling ( about 100 ml ) ( its good for a lot of things ) A compass if you want to go off trail. Oh yes a usefull thing to know if you visit christiania - dont take any pictures there without the people living there is giving you the OK - they dont like that. just ask them then it will be ok. There are NO dangerous animals in Denmark - non at all. Germans dont speek english if they can avoid it at all. and dont count on that they will accept creditcards always, have euro cash. Food at resturants in northern europa is HUGELY expensive compared to the US( 3 good meals 1 bottle of wine or a couple of beers cost roughly $150 ½ gall of soda at the grosery store is about $5 You should try blackbread ( rugbrød (Danish bread)) its quite different to what they have in the US and it only costs $2 for a loaf You can drink tap water in northern europe its 100% clean and dont taste of anything funny You want to buy alcohol ( for drinking ) in germany ( it' the cheapest place in EU to do that i think ) That's it ..
