Even cheaper than flying Ryanair or similar to Edinburgh is the train from London Kings Cross. Book well ahead for return tickets from £37 www.eastcoast.co.uk and unlike flying you'll see a lot of England and Scotland on the way Hampton Court Palace on the edge of London (Train from Waterloo Station) is well worth a visit A nice country town 60 miles from London is Arundel with its castle and park. Train from London Victoria Station every 30 minutes www.southernrailway.com www.arundel.org.uk Also worth a visit is Bath in Somerset with its beautiful Georgian architecture (85 minutes by train from London Paddington) www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk www.visitbath.co.uk

You could go as far as Edinburgh for some 60 pounds if you buy your return plane tickets in advance with Ryanair.co.uk or easyjet.co.uk. If you want to travel max 100 miles around London to Oxford/Cambridge etc, buy your tickets in advance at trainline.co.uk When in London buy your 1 day, or 1 week London pass, giving you reduced prices to lots of attractions/events etc. If traveling by tube and bus in London buy an Oyster pass for reduced transport prices which you can top up as you please. Remember at weekend, London is packed with tourists on their weekend visit and most of the museums etc close around 5pm.

It would be worthwhile visiting the Cotswolds for a day trip. The area is quite touristy nowadays, but it is still scenic and calm in comparison with London. There are other day trips: Stonehenge and Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, and Stratford-Upon-Avon.
