Jazz is in the guitarist, not the guitar. I like Telecasters, they are versatile and made to last. If you can find one with a hum-bucker in the neck, you're set, a total tone machine. The thing about arch tops that make them some what undesirable is that they are not very versatile; they have a very specialized tone. They are also difficult to play with overdrive and distortion, because they feed back nearly every time you take your hand off the strings. I think you should spend some time at a guitar store and figure out what feels right.

There must be a reason why the vast majority of jazz musicians of the last 60 - 70 years used one of the Gibson hollowbody electrics. The Gibson ES355, 137 or the L5 or any other Gibson hollowbody electric. The L5 will set you back about 5 -6 grand. The best guitarist on the planet, George Benson, uses Ibanez. Others use whatever they like but for the most part it's Gibson.

mate, for smooth jazz you want the gibson 355. it's semi acoustic, making it very smooth. Its quite pricey, although you did ask for the best.

PRS. Best guitars on the market...

Yep, Fender. Either a Strat or a Jazzmaster.
