    I am a wound, ostomy & continence nurse & love this nursing specialty. It has many of the benefits of an advanced practice role, but requires only a 2 month educational program. A WOC nurse can work in home care, clinics, acute care, industry, long term care, or hospice. We help people w/ new ostomies learn to care for themselves, or help them years after the surgery if they are having stoma problems. We work with staff nurses to prevent pressure ulcers, and manage their care if they do develop. Some WOC nurses run continence clinics, with biofeedback. There are so many different roles that a WOC nurse can fill. And, believe me, if you can deal with a fistula or problem ostomy that has stymied the nurses & brought the patient to tears, you have made a very positive change in a person's life. Both patients & nurses & even physicians are very grateful for your expertise!
