Is there a special service for adoption for the military?

How is the Interbank Mobile Payment Service (IMPS) doing in India in terms of user adoption?

  • What are the factors affecting widespread adoption?

  • Answer:

Some data here: http://www.npci.org.in/impsVolumes.aspx Factors driving adoption? Many. Here are some. 1. Bank really don't like IMPS. IMPS charges flat 25 paisa (old data) per transaction. This will affect bank because they are used to charging 5 rupees for NEFT and 25rs per RTGS type transactions. So, IMPS is almost same RTGS (except the 25k per day limit) but way cheaper. So bank will lose a lot of money if IMPS takes off. nobody is promoting IMPS. 2. Its kind of difficult to use. The funda of IMPS is, a user/merchant needs to getan MMID and PIN from bank. (which are different from ATM PIN, A/C No, Internet banking password etc.,). So the burden of remembering another 2 numbers is kind of tough. 3. Bank needs to provide an interface to access IMPS. Which they do, but kind of difficult to access. For example, HDFC says that their IMPS interface is via ngpay. But if you install ngpay on your mobile, you dont see ATMExpress (under which IMPS exists) option in Symbian phones. In Android, ATMExpress is shown, but IMPS (under Money Transfer option) is not available. Also, when i called HDFC banking phone line to ask them to issue MMID to me, they outright lied saying that HDFC is not part of IMPS network. (But NPCI website shows HDFC as participating banks). SBI provides many ways as well, and they require quite an effort to use. They provide Java apps, USSD interface etc., All of them are very difficult to use. Reg MMID issuance, AFAIR, it requires you to go home branch and submit an application. Requires quite an effort from user side just to get started. 4. Transaction Flow: If you see how transaction flow, esp e-commerce (IRCTC) transactions, they require user to generate OneTimePassword to complete the transaction, which again requires user to send SMS to special number which can incur an extra cost of 3rupess (no data available) per transaction. Also, user needs to remember the format of the sms every time. So, over all the idea was good, the implementation was so-so. despite all these issues, IMPS still some following.

Other answers

Some key factors affecting adoption are: (a) lack of customer awareness, (b) process of customer on boarding (c) lack of support, by banks, on all mobile platforms.            IMPS has a new service called P2A (Person to A/C No). From the banks application one can pay another person by entering their A/C no and IFS code, and the transaction is done in real time. 35 banks have gone live with this, and another 13 are in the pipeline of implementation and testing. This service of IMPS is doing well, and could well provide the push towards mobile banking/payments. Last month there were 400k transactions on IMPS.
