What's the best machine for development?

What machine do you use for programming and development?

  • I have been doing programming from past two years and using Linux Distro on my Dell Inspiron but for some time I have been feeling that the productivity has actually reduced due to machine limitations. I have been thinking of buying a laptop / ultrabook and setting up the environment for doing programming stuff. I would like to know which environment do you prefer (Linux / Windows / Macintosh) and what specifications are enough for doing enterprise level development.

  • Answer:

I use http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t430/ running Ubuntu 12.04. I mostly do web development and it's good enough for my purposes. The keyboard is the best among the ones I've seen on a laptop. The Dell Inspiron is OK as a content consumer or a hobbyist programmer, but it's too clunky for professional developers. Most developers I know either use Mac or are planning to switch soon. But among the Linux fans and those who have to test their apps on Windows/IE, the Thinkpad is the way to go. The Chrome Pixel is apparently gaining traction within Google. See http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/chromebook-pixel-review/.
