There are a number of things you can do (the resource listed below provide a lot more information). Firstly, don't fall in love with search volumes, they're just estimates -- you can probably guesstimate that you will receive around 40% of the search volume for a given term if you manage to obtain a top spot in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Secondly, always use exact search when searching for keywords, this means the search volume returned will be for that exact term and that term alone. Next, take a look at the trends and advertiser competition column. Analyze trends to make sure there is no seasonal impact around a particular term. Advertiser competition provides a good indication of whether a term actually works e.g. whether it converts simply because it it didn't, advertisers wouldn't be as likely to bid on it. You should also invert your terms as much as possible e.g. "hotel manchester" and "manchester hotel" and always include both singular and plural variations e.g. "hotel" and "hotels". You should also plan for a long-tail approach in the short term. Look at the various trends and patterns in your search data and try and make sure you get the lion's share of terms 3-4 words in length making their way onto your site. You can do this by looking at patterns in how people search in your niche and then loosely adopting these patterns in your web copy. As for big generic terms, you will likely be wasting your time (you will certainly be wasting your time in the short term). Remember, there are companies out there paying thousands upon thousands, even millions, to promote their sites in the SERPs or online (particularly in competitive niches). I would also consider using alternative resources like The Google Wonder Wheel, Suggested Search, Related Terms & SEM Rush (a very good tool). You can see the comprehensive guide to these tools and loads more tips in the resource listed below.

When searching on Google, i suggest starting from a competitors web site. dont search for keywords. give Google a URL (your web site, or competitors'). ask Google what they suggest for the web site. find the ones that you have products for, and make sense to write the product description about. dont write for keywords, write for humans. write about the products you have, and that people are searching for
