Answer:
Virtual schools do operate in Texas. That would include public schools like K12, Insight, Connections, etc. They are public schools and - just like the one you are in now - paid for by the taxpayer. It is NOT homeschooling, but public school. Homeschoolers in Texas enjoy some very specific and non-invasive laws which do not apply to public schools. They are two separate educational alternatives available to parents. With virtual learning, you spend your days in front of the computer doing lessons. Just like public schools you must attend a certain number days and a certain number of hours per day (usually 180 days, 6 hours a day). When your parents enroll you they are required to sign a contract indicating that they will return the loaner computer and a parent will be present during school hours to function as a 'learning coach'. You must use their computer because it is set up to monitor your education. You are watched by the camera so as to insure no one else is doing your lessons, so you cannot use your own computer. It requires you and your parents to be very dedicated to completing the program and all the lessons. I am, however, concerned that you might not be a good candidate for online education. I think you need to be in a regular brick and mortar school where you have a teacher right there. You are having difficulty with spelling and grammar and online schools do not have the staff to help you with that. Your online teacher might have 500 students that she or he spends 10 minutes a day with. My advice to you would be to worry less about money and more about your education. Your parents will still have to spend money to feed you no matter where you go to school. If at all possible spend the summer working on your spelling and grammar so in the fall you can go back and wow your teachers. How? all homeschoolers know the answer to that one - read a lot. Go to the library and check out books that look interesting. Read the stories and you will see how sentences are put together and words are used and spelled. Have a wonderful summer full of adventure with books.

Maybe not. It all depends on how much help you need. (And you work at your own PACE, not paste!) If you pay for a full course load from providers like K12, you can spend upwards of $7,000 a year. If you buy online courses piecemeal with interaction from a teacher, I've seen many of them priced at $200 for a six-week course. If you have to add the cost of a computer onto that, forget "saving" any money. Homeschooling means you're going to provide the education yourself, and that means paying for whatever you need. You might find it a lot cheaper to get help from someplace like Kumon.

Texas offers the Texas Virtual School Network for homeschooling, you apply for it through your school district, and it is offered at no cost, I believe. You can read about it here: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=4826
