First, you need to find out what the homeschooling laws are in Michigan. For that I recommend: http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/regional/Michigan.htm It will explain for free what you need to get started and how to comply with Michigan law. You can also find a support group there, either Christian or secular, that meets your needs. A local support group can usually steer you through the process a little easier because they generally know the local individuals, situations and customs. And there are lots of good articles to help you figure out what kind of homeschooling you want to meet the unique, individual needs of your son. Best wishes to both of you.

There is many different things that you can do. There is homeshooling out there that you need to be the teacher. Or there is online home schooling where you can just have him do all his work through the internet. Its mainly just on what you think would be best. I am sure that you can maybe google some home school programs. I know there is one that you just order the books and thats pretty much all you have to pay for. Hope everything works out.

When I started researching Homeschooling for my son I loved www.homeschooling.about.com Lots of references and easy to follow and navigate. I also checked out books about homeschooling at the local library. Lisa Welchell has a great book- geared toward Christian homeschooling but it made me feel like it was possible! I also liked The Everything Homeschool book and Homeschool for Free. Both had excellent references. One thing to remember is that you should start with contacting your local school board to get the local laws about homeschooling, also remember you only need to be one day ahead of your child! You don't need to be a certified teacher just have a willingness to learn and teach. yahoo groups, facebook and meetup.com all have great local homeschooling groups. Our school district also offers a blended school for homeschoolers where they can go to a group class one or two days a week, have activities with other kids their age and learn state standard lessons- my 4th grade son goes once a week for Science. I love teaching him science at home but its great to have access to the lab equipment without going out of pocket. Another resource is Cyber school. Our state and many others offer public online schools. Its a great way to make the transisiton to homeschool. In Florida, for example, you must be enrolled in public school for at least one year in the state before you are eligible for Virtual cyber school -they use K12 here so its a $5000 value for free. I didn't care for virtual school after a year so we are now fulltime homeschool but it was nice to make the transistion that way. Best of luck to you!

If you are looking for a home school program that is OUTSTANDING, check Seton Home Study Program. They are based out of Front Royal Virginia. I've been using them since I began homeschooling my son in 5th grade - he is in the 9th grade. They sent all the books, lesson plans, tests and answer keys you need. They do charge a fee but you get all the books. The books alone cost more then the fee. They hold graduation ceremonies for those children who wish to go to it. It is held in May in Front Royal.
