Answer:
What you are describing is called: Transitions Hope this helps. The most important transitions and often the most difficult are at the beginning and end of the first days of schools. These are the times when toddlers say good-bye for the first time to their parents. However, any transition can become a problem if children don’t know what to do, or, if they are required to wait long periods of time between one activity to another. When children are made to wait while teachers get organized (find material and set-up) disruptions ( restlessness, pushing, biting, crying, screaming, hitting, kicking, throwing things, and calling the teacher repeatedly to tattle tale) are bound to occur. WHAT ARE YOUR TRANSITIONAL STRATEGIES? BEGINNING OF SCHOOL: Transition from home to School (What’s your strategy?) BEGINNING OF SCHOOL HELLOS & GOOD-BYES Toddlers usually arrive at your programs with their families. Each day your programs begins with families and children saying hello to you and good-bye to one another. Each day ends as families and children reunite and say good-bye to you. Learning to separate from and reunite with people we love is a life-long process. It is not a goal to be achieved in the first week, month or year of child care. Separations and reunions can bring out deep feelings in everyone involved. Some of these feelings can be uncomfortable, and it is natural to want to avoid them. It is not surprising that you and children’s parents may often conspire to get through the beginning and end of the first days of school as quickly as possible. In part because hellos and good-byes arouse such strong feelings, they can be a valuable learning tool for toddlers. Toddlers can learn about what it means to be a separate person who has deep attachments to others. You as the caregiver/teacher can support this kind of learning. QUESTIONS CHILD CARE EDUCATORS SHOULD CONSIDER 1. What do you find most challenging during the first days of school, OR MORE SIMPLY PUT: what do you really hate about it? 2. How do you set the stage for hellos and good-byes the first day of school, OR MORE SIMPLY PUT: how do you get rid of the parents, so you can start working with the children? 3. How can I support children and families when it comes time to saying hello and good-bye. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING IDEAS (Check prior with Director to see if these ideas coincide with the centers polices and procedures) First, take a look at your program through the eyes of children and their families. 2. Plan to spend some time with each child and his or her family before the child is left in your care for the first time. Invite parents and other family members to visit your program with their child. When parents get to know you prior to the first day of school, they feel more at ease when they leave their child(ren) with you on the first days of school. Then too, children will feel more at ease when they see you spending time with their families. 3. Hang a welcome sign up at the beginning of the year with names and photos of children and members of their families. It’s a good idea to keep the sign up for a month or two. In addition to communicating the message of welcome, photos will help families get to know one another’s names and the names of each other’s children. You can also make a list of names for families to take home. This will prove especially helpful when children enter your program during the year.

Sounds like you are to see this from the perspective of the parent learning how to help their child. If this is the case the parent should visit the preschool at a time when things in the class are calm, like outdoor time for the rest of the class. The parent, child & teacher can be in the room and the teacher can give the child a tour of the class, allowing the child to explore the class, the parent can get to know teacher & ask all the important questions. As a parent I would ask the teacher when is the best time to return, a time when the other kids are in the class, the teacher should choose a low key time. Parent & child should return, this will give the child a sense of how the room runs & the parent will be able to see the teacher in action, how does teacher deal w/ situations etc. The child should be invited to engage in the activities of the class at this time, the 2nd visit the child should also be more at ease, after all he/she has been there before. The teacher should also team up your child with a child in the class that is outgoing for this visit. This would be a good time to let the child know that the parent is going to step out of the room for a short time to visit the office, ask the child, would he/she like to play while parent steps out, let the child lead the way here. If child is enrolled, on the childs 1st day parent should only hang around for a few min. if you've made the right choice, the teacher can handle what ever comes up & will know how to draw the child in. This time is as much a transition for the parent as the child, teachers are in a comfort zone w/ the child but this time can be hampered by the hovering parent. If you have chosen a school that really cares about all the children & the parents, the school will be happy to help make this time as easy & stress free as possible. So, this is short but you get the point, expand on it w/ all that you have already learned and I'm sure you will do fine on the assignment. You got this far & I'm sure you didn't want the entire packet, right.
