What is film studies like?

What do graduates of Film Studies do after studying?

  • I was just wondering. (I'm not referring to filmmaking, but film studies.) To people who have studied the subject and are done with their programs (or about to be) - Once you're done with studying the various modules of your course (say, spanning different eras and directors), and with your dissertation / thesis, what do you do? Do you head to further studies? A PhD? Do you get into academia? Film festival programming, archiving, curation...what? I'm looking at it as an avenue of further study but I'm queasy about options after. So, any clarification from people in the know would be great :)

  • Answer:

Cinema Studies students have many options. They can become academics and teach Cinema Studies. They can go on museum staffs and program film series. They can write books. They can become movie critics/essayists. They can program/run film festivals.
