How do you forward a text using the G1?

Adobe Photoshop: What's the difference of using a text layer versus using a shape layer converted from a text layer?

  • I'm trying to create an icon for an iPhone app using some texts (say 'abc'). I guess there are a few ways to manipulate these texts to add some blending options. I first converted the text layer to a shape layer. Then, I realized that I could apply the same blending options just by using the text layer. Thus, I'd like to know what may be the difference between the two methods.

  • Answer:

Shape layers are how Photoshop simulates vector graphics. Ostensibly, used when you want to do things normally saved for Illustrator (type along a path, mess with curves, or simply expand a layer without losing resolution). A lot like the 'Expand' function in illustrator. Probably not necessary for your project, unless you're doing some heavy manipulation of the shapes. But you never know. Photoshop is so deep, I could be overlooking some hidden potential.

Text can be edited, but there are limitations on the manipulation of text as a vector. In case of text converted to a shape, complete vector manipulation can be done, but the text cannot be edited further. In your context, you can first decide the font, the content of the text layer and then convert it to shape for complete shape based editing.
