I've used beach rocks for years in my tanks with no problem. Usually I select smooth and rounded rocks (or at least rocks without cavities that could hide who knows what). I soak them in a bucket of water and a few cups of bleach overnight, rinse very well (like 5 times) and hard scrub, boil them for a half hour, rinse and light scrub (if needed) and put them in the tank. I like the natural variety and reminder of places I've visited. I don't use sharp rocks at all in my tank because I don't want a chance a fin could be cut, but others I know do use rocks with sharp edges with apparently no problem after years. Good Luck!

well if your getting rocks from outside you should splash a bit of vinigar on it and if it fizzes DONT USE IT but if it doesnt fizz well then you can use it. Just get a scrubbing brush and scrub as hard as you can with it all over about 10 times with a little bleach. once youve done that hose it off then let it dry in the sun till dried then repeat the prosses 1 more time once thats done you hafto get a pot of boiling water and drop the rocks in the pot with it being completly covered in water then you bring it to the boing and let it boil for about 30-40 minutes once thats done hose it off realy well. and thats it to make sure it wont harm your fish put a bit off your tank water in a clean bucket and do the general tests of the water then drop your rock in and leave it over night then come back the next day and do the tests again if they havent chaged very much then you can use it in your aquarium but just to make sure test you tank water againg a week after putting it in just to make sure.

Best way? Buy them already prepared for aquaria.

Actual water and bleach then let them sit out side for a week in the sun thei will break down the chlorine and you will have rocks that are good for a tank Vinegar is natural and will not harm your fish and Bleach breaks down in sun light Do not user any SOAP this will leave a residue and will poison the tank any soap is a toxin to your fish

Craigslist or ebay. People will sell this stuff super cheap - especially if you pick it up and save the shipping freight!

I found some cheap aquarium gravel for my tank at a wal-mart, the fish don't seem to know the difference between the expensive brand and the cheap knock-off.
