How do I get a MiniDV tape out of a dead camcorder?

I have two camcorders which I haven't used in years but each one had a power supply that you plug into the wall plug in your house. This is used at home so you don't have to worry if the battery goes dead at the wrong time. If you still have it and the book that came with the camcorder read the directions.
