    Don't pay more that $5000 for the '98 Stang. The 3.8L has always been prone to head gasket failures. The sn95 chassis that the Mustang grew into from 1995 is stiffer, and better than the '79-'93 chassis. It also has 4-wheel disc brakes and 5-lug hubs. I love the 5.0L fox mustangs, (87-93), and believe these make the best platforms for drag and road-type racing/autocross, etc. from a bang-for-the-buck standpoint. The old 2.3L is very durable, but it doesn't make much power and I don't think you'll be happy with it. Don't be afraid of the '87-'93 5.0L Mustangs! There is a huge aftermarket, they are almost bulletproof, and everybody knows how to work on them. Also, you can find parts easily and cheaply everywhere. 5.0L x RPM = WOOHOO!!! Good luck!

Squeezing horsepower out of a V-6 is like squeezing blood out of a stone. Look around for a deal on a GT from the same era. You won't pay much more but the potential is there for BIG horsepower. The V8's from that era whether a 5.0 or the 4.6 mod motors can be built up to whatever you want, depending on your budget.
