I Need a List of Horse supplies.

What supplies do you need before getting a horse?

  I'd definitely make sure you have the knowledge to own a horse. ;) At the least, perhaps buy a horse care book and read through it a time or two! You'll likely need: - Brushes. A curry comb, hard brush, soft/face brush, and any others you might want. - Other grooming items. Hoof pick, mane/tail comb, shedding blade, scissors. - Fly spray, reccomending the best kind you can get. ;) You may also need a fly repellent that you put around a horse's eyes and other sensitive areas. - Antibiotic creams should your horse get a scrape! And trust me, it will. - Halter (NOT a rope halter...nylon or leather, making sure it fits well. They typically are sized by the horse's weight.) - Lead rope - Lunge line - Fly mask/fly sheet. - Several different blankets. (It's best to either get a medium-weight blanket, or get two light-weight blankets that you can layer and take off depending on the weather.) - Buckets! - Bathing tools like a sweat scraper, and assorted sponges or brushes used only for bathing. - A helmet, of course. - Steel-toed boots....you WILL get stepped on at some point! (: - You might need a riding crop if you end up with a lazy horse. As far as tack goes: - A bridle. - A saddle. (And not just -any- saddle, be SURE it fits or you may have a very sore/angry horse that develops behavior problems!) - Saddle pad. (Thinner skinned or sensitive horses may need two saddle pads to ensure the above doesn't happen!) - A girth - Any protective gear like bell boots or polo wraps. - You may need a martingale of some sort, or extra training gear. If you'd like to show: - A trailer. (Never use a stock trailer!) - Haynet - A hood to put over the horse's mane braids so it doesn't rub them out the night before a show. - Clippers and clipper blades. - An extra saddle pad, preferably white, kept clean for the showring! - Showing apparel for you! - Protective head bumpers and/or leg boots so your horse doesn't hurt itself on the ride to the showgrounds. (These are much more useful than they seem...my mare had a bald patch on her head for her first show! :p) I'm sure I've missed some things, and I definitely can't estimate a cost on all of the supplies you'll need. Horses are expensive creatures! Believe me, buying one is the cheapest part. On average, I spend $5-10,000 on my horse anually, depending on how much I show that year. (: If possible, do what we did and purchase your horse, and borrow supplies if possible, gradually purchasing your own until you're self-sufficient. Buying a horse is expensive enough, but when you have to run right out and buy it its own saddle (upwards of $250), bridle ($40 and up to a couple hundred!), girth (around $40-50), martingale ($80ish), etc....it can be a little stressful! Anyway, good luck on getting in to horses! Certainly an expensive hobby, but nothing is quite as rewarding. (:
