How to set up slingbox?

How is what Aereo is doing different from what Sling Media has been doing with the Slingbox?

  • http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/act-four/wp/2014/04/22/in-aereo-case-the-supreme-court-struggles-with-the-precedents-it-might-set/ The Slingbox was introduced in 2005 and has been allowing individuals to rebroadcast local content for personal use for years. Why have the broadcast networks sued Aereo?

  • Answer:

Simple.  With a sling box the consumer is 100% under control and there is a clear cut precedence of their right to do it with slingbox.  With Aereo, you have the argument about rebroadcasting.  Networks get a lot of money from cable companies and if Aereo can do this, it may be possible that the cable companies could also replicate the concept and stop paying.

I can make an easier argument than comparing Aereo to Slingbox. Suppose I have an apartment in LA and an apartment in NY.  Suppose my apartment in NY comes with a VCR.  I record some TV, eject the tape, FedEx the tape to LA, jump on a plane, fly to LA, open the tape and watch it.  That's all perfectly legal and well established precedent.  FedEx is not charged with redistributing copyrighted material.  My landlord is not charged with redistributing copyrighted material even if my landlord told me upfront that the apartment comes with a VCR and a great antenna for recording TV. Now suppose my apartment also came with a robot named C3-PO.  Suppose I could merely phone C3-PO in NY, tell him to record American Idol and FedEx the tape to me in LA.  C3-PO wouldn't be charged with copyright infringement because he's a robot under my control.  In contrast I could NOT ask a human to do this for me.  Even it it was my spouse, they would technically be in violation of copyright law when they ship the tape to me.  However, if I built a system that completely automated the recording and distribution of American Idol, and I was the one controlling that system and the one viewing the show, then where is the transgression? Let's take it another step.  Suppose you are my roommate and we split the rent so we can both use C3-PO from time to time.  As long as you don't ask C3-PO to record something on my behalf and I don't ask C3-PO to send me a copy of your recordings then everything seems legit no matter how many people share that apartment or rent it after me and you. Now let's make some optimizations.  I don't build my own apartment or VCR or robot.  I just buy all that stuff or better yet, I rent all that stuff as I need it.  I don't record to video tape, I record to a digital video file.  I don't FedEx the file, I send it over the internet.  Without any moving parts the robot isn't needed anymore.  My "VCR" can record the show, create the video file and send it over the internet without any human or robot intervention. Now make the apartment really small.  Make the antenna and the recorder really small.  Add a lot of roommates.  Presto, it's Aereo.  It's the same concept with better technology and scale.  How is what Aereo is doing different from C3-PO sending video tapes to you by FedEx?

To put simply Slingbox work with cable Tuner and Cabe company still pay network provider for their contents and in turn cable company also get pay when you rent their equipment and subcribed.  While AEREO do not pay anyone yet they will charge you $8/MO for using their antennas.  This upset network provider because Aereo stealing their contents but leave then out of the cut, also allow this to go on may tempt cable company to do the same and just bypass paying network provide as well.  Also if you are paying for Aereo these customer base might just leave cable company as well there by under cutting and hurting both network provider and cable company as well as advertisement revenues.
