How can I play the Alto Saxophone louder with a good sound?

If you can play the alto saxophone, can you play the tenor saxophone?

  • Alright well right now I can play the alto saxophone. I want to join a band, but they may have too many alto saxophones so I would have to do the tenor. Do they have like the same ...show more

  • Answer:

All the saxophones have the same fingerings. What you will find is that your embouchure will take adjusting, and you will probably be very tense and tight on the larger tenor mouthpiece, but it is no hardship to get used to. Swapping between them may cause a bit of trouble at first when you're trying to maintain a nice tone on both but it is still possible. PS. They don't sound an octave apart, but a 4th apart. Also, the alto can hit much higher notes (altissimo) than the tenor can.

Yes you will likely find the tenor slightly easier to play. The alto requires a tighter embrouchure, more difficult tone control. I went from alto to baritone, and i had no problems, just needed a bit more air. Good Luck, you'll Enjoy it.

All the fingerings are the same. The only difference is the sound. Saxophones alternate from Eb to Bb when they go by size. Soprano, Tenor and Bass are in Bb while Sopranino, Alto and Baritone are all in Eb. Transposition would be different, but that is usually not a problem. Any saxophone player can play most, and alto and tenor are very close to each other in terms of embouchure, feel and sound. Good luck!

If you can play one instrument in the saxophone family You can play every single other saxophone type. So yes you can switch from alto to tenor or alto to baritone or alto to soprano saxophone and it would still be the same fingering and placements. The only difference is the pitches it will sound lower or higher depending on the saxophone type. So since your going to tenor its going to sound a little lower than the alto.
