What's a good book to learn to read music and play jazz for bass guitar?

    Hey Sami. The ONLY choice that got me reading notation and playing jazz super fast is "Ed Friedland's: Bass Method Books 1, 2, and 3". Once you complete it, using a metronome, and you're patient, you'll be flying through those scores and moving on to way more advanced stuff like Jaco Pastorius. I think you can buy it on Amazon or B&N. Good luck! ps. Remember, you should also get a good metronome and try to work up to 120 bpm(beats per minute) for most standard pieces. Plus listen to ALL styles of music, not just jazz. That's the only way to improve and be in demand.

Not sure how well these will be if you are at rock bottom - you may need a little help with the basics of reading and counting; perhaps you can find that for free on YouTube That said, I would recommend both of these books; I used them when i was learning to play bass The Evolving Bassist - Rufus Reid Reid is a well-respected jazz bassist who has played with many of the greats. His book begins with simple reading and technical exercises that become progressively more challenging as you work through the book. Bille Nuovo Metodo This book starts simply and presents increasingly more difficult etudes as you work through it. It's intended for double bass (upright bass) but theres no reason you can't use it for electric bass.
