  It first depends on what your appointment was. If you had plans to go drinking with friends, it probably shouldn't take precedence over your job. If you decided to stay, that is usually highly looked upon from management. Worst case scenario, let them know that you can stay a little past your time you are supposed to leave, but you do have somewhere to be if no one shows up. As far as your boss snapping at you, it kind of sounds like they may have felt like you were insulting their intelligence by giving directions too simplified. Plus like you said they were already on edge from servers not showing up like they were supposed to. Sounds like the restaurant needs to find new servers that actually show up and stay late like you.
