  Most restaurants won't hire a person for a serving position without previous serving experience. Usually, they will start an inexperienced person out as a host or bus person, so that they can learn the menu and the ropes of the restaurant in less fast-paced manner. After some time as a host they may promote you to server. The best way to get hired at all is to show up to apply wearing nice business type clothes, most people think because it is a restaurant they can wear a tee shirt and jeans to apply, but for every restaurant I have worked, they would just toss those applications in the trash. Another tip to save you time, only apply at restaurants that are actually hiring, otherwise your application will get lost in a pile and when that place does need to hire, they will only look at applications that come in during that period. It isn't exactly hard to learn to waitress, it just requires that you be really quick and efficient, and able to anticipate the needs of the tables. Multi-tasking is a must. Good luck!
