RN to BSN bridge program?

  • Is it faster to get associates in nursing at a 2-year and then enter a RN-BSN program to get a BSN? Or go the normal 4 year route? And how did you do your schooling? ( already ...show more

  • Answer:

Bridge will take longer. Considering to get an AS degree you need about 1 year of prerequisite courses before you can apply, then it's two years for the nursing program, that's 3 years. Then to complete the BSN it's about 18-24 months. So you're talking 4.5-5 years (assuming you get accepted to both programs the first time you apply). A BSN is 4 years of full-time coursework from start to finish, also making the same assumption that you get admitted first try. Nursing programs are impacted and there are more applicants than spots for admission, but the answer above, suggesting that wait times could be 2-4 years is not really realistic. If you do well and qualify for admission, most students are not waiting THAT long. They might get in the second time they apply. Or third. Most people by this point would start applying at other schools instead of putting all their eggs in one basket. I went the AD RN route and then did the BSN bridge program. I only did it that way because I went back to college as an adult in my older 20's, having been a high school drop out who later got my GED. Financially I couldn't afford to go to a university's BSN program and didn't know what to expect or if I could handle it. I enrolled in the BSN bridge program the very next semester after I graduated, and did it all online (with the exception of some public health clinical experiences).

If you are going to get a BSN eventually the traditional 4 year route is the faster way. It actually takes 2.5-3 years to get an associates in nursing (depending on if you take summer courses) and then at least another 2 years to complete the RN-BSN. So that route you are looking at 4.5-5 years to get a BSN compared to 4 years the traditional way.
