Difference between a RN and a NP?

  • in ontario, canada please. :) I know what a registered nurse does, but is a nurse practitioner better? as in higher level? like more actual health, not like what a LPN does. thanks.

  • Answer:

An NP is an RN with advanced training. They can write prescriptions and make medical diagnosis. And what do you mean, "more actual health, not like what a LPN does?" I am an LPN student is who has complete all the book work and I you'd better believe I work in health care! Once I pass the NCLEX, I will be a nurse! Just the other day during clinicals, I gave medication, took CBGs, gave insulin, and changed wound dressings. That is the work of a nurse. I took my friend to the ER yesterday and I was her patient advocate for a doctor who didn't know is @$$ from his elbow. He tried to give her medication that she was allergic to and tried to give another medication from the same family.

Other answers

A nurse practitioner has several more years of training and schooling. In many places they are able to write prescriptions for non-opioid drugs. They get paid quite a bit more also.
