How hard is homeschooling?

How hard is it for you to be signed out of school and start homeschooling?

  • For me it's very hard, I'm in HS and somehow I feel that my story bellow happened to be illogical. They made me hate their school even more! My parents signed me out of ...show more

Where do you live? I'm guessing the US, but some things are different from state to state. This page may help you: http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp I was unschooled in NC; my parents registered us as a school (it wasn't too hard). Any time we needed anything official, we made it. I got a transcript (I wrote it in Word), and a degree. I did not get a GED, but I did go on to get a BA and a MA (not homeschooling at that point :-). We just made up a name; no one ever complained. It is important for you to know that homeschooling is legal schooling. You aren't opting out of school, you are changing schools. You may still need to do state-required testing. Of course, it is possible to simply drop out of school, but I hope it doesn't come to that. I have never heard anything about unschooling to be illegal, but, as I said, you may be required to do year-end testing. I was never in school, so I don't know anything about the leaving-public-school process, but I would assume that once you are officially homeschooling, they wouldn't have a valid legal claim on you...

Each state has their own laws about homeschooling. You have to follow those laws. I got my GED at 17 & I had to have special permission from the state to do so. This was in GA& in 1993. GA law at that time said you had to be 18 to take the GED test. I had dropped out of school due to many issues including stays in a mental hospital due to depression and suicide attempts. I was messed up bad. My parents had to get letters from my many doctors & teachers. I was not homeschooled. I dropped out and was put in a special class for teens getting their GED's. This class lasted about 6wks. It sounds like what you are saying is your state is the same way. 1. What are the steps to be out of school and start homeschooling? - this depends on your state laws. Every state is different. Go here & click on your state - http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp 2. Do you need to be 18 to be a homeschooler that aiming for a GED? - again this depends on your state laws I've read the rest of your questions and each one will get the same reply. You need to look into the state laws of your state. As for #6 I'm not sure what this woman is talking about. Here is info on unschooling - http://ulfaq.home.comcast.net/~ulfaq/ULfaq.html Most important though are you parents going to be there to help you and back you up with homeschooling. When I was 16 I wanted to be homeschooled but my parents in now way supported me.

ozboz really needs to answer this one, I think... The administrative folks you are talking to are either clueless or liars, take your pick. I THINK (and I'm not in CA, so take it with a grain of salt) that you have to set your homeschool up as a private school and that makes it option 3. Here's a HUGE flippin' list of California homeschool support folks: http://www.midnightbeach.com/hs/California.html Funny how all those people in those organizations are doing what your school says you can't do, isn't it? I would be SO tempted to throw a lawyer into this mix and see how fast they change their minds. This may help, too: http://www.hsc.org/legal101.php

The district director is either ignorant of the law or she is intentionally lying to you. Yes your parents can teach you in CA. Your parents need to make up a name for your private school then sometime between Oct 1 and 15 they fill out the Private School Affidavit online form. Checkout the information at the Homeschool Association of California website. They have a lot of Information including information on completing high school and entering college http://www.hsc.org/index.php
