  • Answer:

Demand is high for both. Salary prospects are similar The type of work they do is completely different. The industries are different as well. As a chemical engineer, you can expect to work in manufacturers where they use chemicals to create their products. This could be glue manufacturers, oil manufacturers, instrumentation manufacturers, pump manufacturers, thermostat manufacturers, or anything. You would be improving manufacturing processes, updating MSDS (Material safety data sheets for chemicals), finding alternate chemicals you can use that are safer and more environmentally friendly and more affordable, etc. You could also work in R&D where you find new uses for chemicals. As an Electrical/Computer engineer, you will find your self working in Controls, Instrumentation, or Software at companies like ABB inc, Johnson Controls, Auto manufacturers, Comcast, Intel, HP, Google, and more. On the EE side, you can work in construction and design electrical systems for buildings, or on the Computer side you can write software and apps.

My $0.02 Neither. Let me explain why. It is very difficult to make a living as a Chemical or Electrical engineer working on your own. As such both of these careers will ultimately land you a job in a corporation. This is not so bad. There are lots of great companies out there. But the real problem are the soft sciences. Beware the soft sciences- MBA, Accountant, Finance, and Markerters. These "professionals" are the ones typically making business decisions in corporate America and they will not think twice about outsourcing your career/profession to the lowest bidder- AKA: China, Korea, India, etc. If you are smart enough to be an engineer, be an Entrepreneur. Best of luck.
