You can check your start menu if its installed it should show there or go to control panel and select security center it should say if its detected one, lastly check add/remove in control panel for any firewall installations a good firewall is www.comodo.com - Comodo firewall pro its free

All the answers here are rubbish - we need to know what OS your using - XP or Vista. Comodo pro firewall is a good firewall but does not work yet with Vista. XP & Vista comes with its own firewall but its not great - click start>control panel & you will see your firewall. AVG AV is a poor AV; detection rate only 82% there are far better free ones out there, here is one: http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html (XP & Vista ok) You can only run one AV.

comodo firewall

I can't believe a "top contributor" told you that you can only run one AV program at a time. I have been using AVG and PC Tools AV on my Vista machine for over 6 months with Windows Defender fired up as well with no problems. Advice, like anything else has no absolutes.............................
