The US has regulations on the signals. Emergency and fire is continuous ringing of the general alarm bells. Abandon is "more than 6 short rings followed by a one prolonged ringing" of the general alarm bells. The shorts are about one second, the prolonged is about ten seconds. These signals are usually followed by the same signal on the ship's whistle. There are also signals for launching life boats: one short, lower; two short, stop lowering; thrree short, secure from drills.
