Is it possible to own a pet bat?

Is it possible to have a bat as a pet?

  • depending on where you live of course and I would never keep one as a pet if it meant the bat being miserable and such, I'm just curious thanks =D

  • Answer:

The act of keeping one as a pet will cause it to experience great terror, inappropriate and damaging nutrition, loss of it's right to enjoy reproduction and rearing if it's young, and terrible loneliness and boredom. Wild bats are capable of living over 25 years. Bats kept as pets rarely survive more than one year. Additionally, bats are protected by law at many levels. Regulations govern the taking of bats from the wild, and any exchange between individuals or organizations. The transfer of bats is carefully regulated by the CDC. USDA permits from the Animal Health Inspection Service are required, and special permitting regulations now apply at the state level. Interstate laws also prohibit transport of these animals without special authority. To keep bats in captivity one must be USDA licensed, and have the necessary state and local permits for native wildlife. Bats cannot be transported within the USA without a CDC permit. Bats can only be transferred to an institution that is bona fide conservation, zoological or scientific organization or registered establishments that have approved facilities and certified education programs. A great alternative would be to build a bat box and try to attract the bats to your backyard. It is said that they can kill 500 mosqitoes in an hour.

The Australian Fruit Bat is often kept as a pet as are several of the smaller insect eaters. Most Fruit bats can become tame and will spend most of their waking time attached to their owners and simply sleeping with their heads resting on the shoulder. They do require an extremely large enclosure though and unless that can be provided, with both companions and a proper varied diet, its not advisable to keep them. In the UK they can be kept with heating if required, although due to licensing laws, a Dangerous Wild Animals license is required and without a relevant animal related qualification, it is not possible to apply. Depending on the species, a permission form from the local council is required before the animal can be brought into the area

yes but it would be very highly illegal.but it wouldhave to be in your care from birth and you need access to an always dark place.and you would need 20pounds of insects every day.
