  • Answer:

"without the built in dvd player are a lot more expensive." The $199 systems with the built-in players are basically glorified DVD players with cheap amplification and cheap speakers. These typically: - Do NOT give you inputs for HDTV, Sat, Cable Box or Game systems - Do NOT allow you to hook up 'real' speakers from a real speaker company - Do NOT allow you to upgrade the subwoofer The electronics that allow you to hook multiple devices, use 100's of different speakers, etc., require more engineering, switching circuits and higher caliber electronics. (A crappy DVD player has to do 1 thing: play it's DVDs so it's much cheaper to make.) A bigger AV Receiver means more power (better sound) but more heat which is why real AV Receivers are big black box's. Yes a real AV Receiver from a name-brand company is better. But good units from Onkyo start at about $380 so it's not a huge investment, but will last you for years.
