The way the market is going, it's shouldn't be too long now. Blu-Ray players were $1k now as low as $300 and dropping. More movies are coming out and being advertised in the BR format. It's all a matter of demand. With prices dropping and more titles coming out, demand will greatly increase -thus pave a path towards mainstream. I don't know whether DVDs will go away (so to speak) like the VHS tape because so many more were sold in such a short period of time (i.e. 10-14 year span), but price and availability will dictate that aspect I'm sure. No, it will be longer than 1-2 years before blu ray becomes mainstream(if it ever does) Blu ray sales are pretty dismal right now. Most people are happy with standard DVD quality. Even people with HDTV's are happy with standard DVD's. They just buy a good upconverting player and the make standard DVD's into near HD quality. Blu ray players are still relatively expensive( the cheapest bottom feeder players are still around $200) and Blu Ray movies are expensive as well. They can cost over twice as much as standard DVD's. Most blu ray movies go for $25-$30 while standard DVDs sell for $15-$20 at most. Also, a lot of people are just buying/renting their movies/tv shows via digital downloads like iTunes or Xbox LIVE Marketplace. So the days of physical media storage(Blu Ray, DVD, CD) could be limited.
