Why won't my converter box work?

Why my digital antenna doesn't work with my CRT TV and converter box?

  • CRT Sony TV Converter Box Terk Digital Antenna Fuquay-Varina, NC

  • Answer:

Indoor antennas, analog or digital, suffer from poor signal to noise ratio. Get an outdoor antenna. If you amplify the signal from indoors, the signal is weaker (has to pass through walls, and may not be line of sight with the TV transmitter tower). The amplifier adds signal gain, but also adds noise, and even the best amplifiers add noise to the TV signal. You will find that an old outdoor analog UHF antenna will work great as most digital signals are still in the UHF band. Use a good quality waterproof balun and coax cable with that UHF antenna. Check with the FCC website for locations of the digital transmitters, as some stations have moved from where their analog transmitters were. In Los Angeles, one of our stations, KVCR channel 24, moved 90 degrees, requiring an additional UHF antenna just for that station. You can get information from the web on how to build your own antenna if you are interested- that is what I did for getting KVCR.
