    same problem before. if you used the "restricted drivers thing" most likely it didnt give you the right drivers. open a terminal windows and type sudo apt-get install envyng-gtk then once that finishes and app opens install the new nvidia drivers and once you reboot TADA you should be fine

Are you using 8.04 or 8.10? There were some changes to display auto-detection in 8.10, which may have made it harder for you to change resolution. If you're using 8.04, you'll need to add some appropriate entries to /etc/X11/Xorg.conf, which will let you use more resolutions. You can try this command as well, which should let you choose more resolutions: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
