I have some films on my laptop which I currently watch via a media player. Is their a lead so can watch on TV?

Well, you're using an incorrect term: laptops have not been manufactured since about the early 1990s, they are an ancient technology. What you have is either an "Electronic Notebook" portable computer or an "Electronic Tablet" portable computer, which is smaller than the notebook. I know the idiots at Yahoo mis-named this category, but there are no "laptops" anywhere... they only lived for about 7 to 10 years before they all burned out! A lap-top was the size of a brief case, very heavy, and ran quite hot... sometimes setting card tables on fire and burning the legs of users! They do not exist any more. The "television" computer system was intended to replace the hard-drive PC. That is why they have taken our electronic messages away from us, it used to be that we downloaded our e-mails (except when using AOHell which is not on the internet, it is an off-net "closed system"), and we could write, store and manage our messages without signing on. Now everything is taken away, and the plan WAS to stop producing computers altogether, that we would ONLY have receiver terminals and monitors -- hence the television screen monitor idea! Thankfully, that has only happened partially. As the other answerers said, there are several different versions of connector cables IF your television has the receptical for the cable plug. Personally, I would just buy a player and use that without fussing with my electronic notebook or PC.
