If the New York Cosmos can build a stadium before NYCFC, how much would it help its chances to join Major League Soccer?

• The Cosmos are attempting to build a MLS-caliber stadium in Elmont, NY near Belmont Park.  Meanwhile, NYCFC, who beat the Cosmos to a MLS berth, do not have a permanent stadium deal in place, opting for Yankee Stadium as a temporary venue.

  The stadium would help the Cosmos' cause, certainly - in a hypothetical scenario where club ownership launches a serious MLS bid. However, they would still need to clear several additional hurdles at minimum: Come up with an expansion fee on the same order of magnitude that the Yankees and Manchester City paid ($100m+) Submit a successful bid convincing the MLS Expansion Committee that a 3rd NYC-area team would be in the league's best interest (i.e. sufficient market to sustain 3 first division clubs) At present, 4 other MLS expansions are already confirmed: NYCFC (2015) Orlando City SC (2015) Atlanta (Arthur Blank/Falcons, 2017) Miami (Beckham/Claure/season TBD) Plus several other ownership groups/city bids are right behind: Minneapolis San Antonio As it stands, the Cosmos are not in the MLS expansion discussion and look like they will remain a (relatively well-heeled) NASL club. They will not be taking the place of NYCFC.
