You always have access to at least one of them and you can use them interchangeably. I recommend using apps that sync between the two mediums so the information is always up to date on both devices. Also, choose just one or two apps, maximum 3. If you go above that you run the risk of hindering your productivity as you have to always juggle between them (and update them as you mentioned in your question). I like Evernote for notes, Google Calendar for calendar and Wunderlist for a to-do list. Between the 3, there is nothing that cannot be done from a time management perspective (and they all have mobile versions).
