  Sorry to mess with what you already "know" but both orphanages and mental health facilities still exist in the US. Many orphanages are now called children's homes. http://www.thechildrenshome.org/ http://www.lmch.org/united-methodist-childrens-homes.php As to placement of orphans parents are strongly urged to make a will if only to name guardians which means that orphaned kids would be with a relative or trusted friend. But not everyone does this. When they don't often a relative like grandparent or aunt comes forward and Child Protective services works to try to be sure the kids have a good home. Only if all this fails are foster homes used for them and if for some reason that too fails then childrens homes
