Can you transport homemade baked goods on a plane?

Why do so many companies choose to transport goods via truck instead of plane?

  • It seems like there are still a lot of big rigs driving cross-country.  I'm curious about the economics and why this is preferred over transporting the goods by plane.

  • Answer:

Shipping by air is much more expensive than trucking. Using planes is only a realistic option for goods that are on a strict deadline, or that are so profitable that the cost can be justified. If you need to get something to the other side of the world in a matter of days, then air transport is your only choice. Airplanes are extremely expensive to operate. Aviation jet fuel is expensive in the first place, but also consider how big a plane's gas tank is. If you thought it was expensive to gas up an SUV, just imagine how much it costs to fuel a jumbo jet. At today's jet-A fuel price, a Boeing 747 gas tank holds almost $300,000 worth of fuel. Then, there's the cost of paying flight crew wages. Pilots command a higher wage than truck drivers, and it's also necessary to have 2 or 3 people in the cockpit rather than just one truck driver. Plus, airplane operators have to pay huge airport fees just to use the services of international airports around the world. Plus, once the plane lands, the cargo still needs to be shipped by a truck to reach its destination. It costs yet more money to pay for those trucks. The price you pay to ship something by air includes a chunk of all of those costs, plus extra for the company's profit margin. All of these costs get passed on to the customer, and that's bad for business. Every company has to stay competitive on price, so they won't increase the shipping charges on their products if they don't have to. That's why trucks and cargo ships are still the most common shipping methods around the world.

Transport cost for heavy items is very different between air, truck and rail. Air is prohibitively expensive for many items. Trucks are also flexible in delivery location. There are not airports at every location that you want to deliver freight to, so even if you do air transport it requires truck delivery at the end.

Its just because plane is far more costly as compare to trucks and railways. And it will increase the product cost.
