  • Answer:

First of all, you'll have to be near/at the top of your class because many top colleges have quotas from prep schools (they only take a limited number of students). Second, you'll have to get your grades and test scores as high as possible, because everyone applying to the top schools have high grades and test scores and the top schools only accept 10% of them or less. Third, you'll have to find some way to stand out from the rest of the applicants, and while school activities are always good, they won't set you apart. Find out some way to stand out. The best way would be to figure out what you want to major in and find a way to get involved in that field now, either during spare time or in your summers.

There's so much that I could say (stuff like what your father's probably saying), as I am currently going to a state school. The main thing you should know beforehand is that more prestigious doesn't always mean better. Make sure you really look into every school you think about before making the leap, and if possible, visit a couple before making your final decision. I am the happiest I could ever be where I am, because I really connect with the people there. That's the most important thing. My second piece of advice is an overarching one. you listed a lot of stuff that you are reaching out to do, which is great. Participate in as much as you can, but before you worry about individual things, just be sure to take advantage of everything your school offers. Don't worry about singing or dancing ability; every good musical needs a good chorus of people if you don't feel good singing on your own yet. I don't know that any theatre department would have a freshman sing a solo anyway. Don't be distressed if you don't make it into the top team in soccer right away, learn the most you can about it. But above all, make your top priority the whole time the education. I'm not going to say don't worry about your grades at all, but the thing that the top schools look into is that you are interested in the same thing that they're interested in. Make your main pursuit about learning more wherever you go, and you can't go wrong. Everything else will settle into place on its own if you do these three things.
