What observations could i do?

What are good ways i can learn to make scientific observations of the night sky?

  • I am a amateur astronomer . i can recognize a few constellations and am still working on learning more. i need to to know how to study astronomy in a scientific way

  • Answer:

Taking some courses in Physics might help ... later enroll for courses in Astronomy. I think there are universities in England and Australia that offer Astronomy courses online. As for those of us in the Pacific, our ancestors were great observers of the night sky. To them, the night sky (as well as the Sun) was a calender, clock and compass - if you know what I mean.

Read "The Copernican Revolution" by Thomas Kuhn. It's an interesting book and gives a broad introduction to many facets of astronomy. That should give you a good kick start.

I am not an expert in neither physics or astronomy. As far as I know, I suggest that you should make a schedule about your observation. A lot of people who learn things without a clear plan usually end up with seemingly know everything in general, actually knowing nothing in detail. To avoid this, please make up observatory plans and schedules and then learn as scheduled. That's really important.

Sky observation is ecstatic! You totoally engross yourself in its beauty. Here's how you can adopt some scientific ways, as you call it, for night sky observations. Sky map: There are sky maps that you can get. Get a properly labelleb one, of the stars seen from your place of observation or even the entire globe. Make sure that the labelling is correct. Softwares and Applications: You get quite a lot of softwares which will easily work on your laptop. If you're an amateur, try Stellarium. It gives you stars, planets, galaxies and everything else in the night sky, in your precise area, at a particular time. Make sure you go through what all you can see even before going for the observation. That would save time and you can see relatively more objects even. There are also a lot of apps on android that can help you. Some even offer certain sky events. Study the place: Make sure that the light pollution of your place of interest, is as less as possible. Make sure that it isn't cloudy that night. Know what comes where, and at what time. Make sure what you can see with the kind of telescope or binocular that you will be carrying with yourself. Memorizing constellations do help a lot in locating the object you want to see. You will eventually become an expert if you frequent to observations. You'll become more aware about the coordinates of the objects you already know and obviously you will find what you want, more easily. That eventually comes with an experience. Good luck!
