What are my career opportunities?

What are the career opportunities in the field of RF/microwave engineering?

  • I am a UG student of electrical & electronics engineering. I had taken a course on introductory level microwave engineering (electromagnetic waves, waveguides, antennas & simple microwave circuits) a few months ago. It was great and I would love to delve further into it. I want to know 2 things: (1) The different 'sub-areas' (if that is a word) in RF/microwave in which one could specialize and current trends, and (2) career opportunities, including jobs and research. I live in India and would be interested to know opportunities in India as well as the rest of the world. Thanks!

Microwave engineering is typically divided into two subfields, i.e. active and passive. For active microwave circuits, you have RF amplifier, signal generator, modulator, etc. Basically any electronic circuit with transistors or diodes operating at RF frequency can be considered active. For passive microwave circuits, there are microwave filters, power divider, couplers (branch-line, rat-race, directional), circulators and attenuators. I can't help you much on the career or state-of-the-arts part though.

I would recommend subscribing (free) and reading the following RF / Microwave trade publications: microwaves&rf http://www.mwrf.com.............. and  High Frequency Electronics http://www.highfrequencyelectronics.com. These publications should assist you in answering your questions. The October 2015 edition of the microwaves&rf magazine specifically has a well written article (starting on page 34) about RF Microwave careers.
