Country music: Is country a popular music genre in Australia?

  • Keith Urban is a world renowned Country artist. I'm not aware of any other well known country music artists from Australia and I'm curious if country music is a genre that is popular in Australia.

    It seems to be.   A couple of reasons I say that.  My wife and I run the wedding accessory company, The Ritzy Rose.  We created Miranda Lambert's bouquet and other than Texas and Oklahoma picking up so did Australia. We also sell vintage goods and while going through old beer cans yesterday discovered one promoting the country music awards in Australia.  The last is country music icon Keith Urban is from there. These may not prove country is huge in Australia, but with many clients in Australia that are now friends we have realized it is at least somewhat popular.

I go to the CMA Music Festival in Nashville every year and at a focus group for foreign country fans there were 3 Australians out of 6 people. They said that there are several large country festivals every year so this seems to support the idea that it's a pretty popular genre
