What should you highlight when you apply for an senior management/executive level marketing job interview?
-
For the past few months, I have been interviewing for senior management/executive level (Director, Senior Director, VP) marketing roles. Even though I have held these roles in the past (with smallish companies without a marketing department), it seems like I can't get the positions even though I know I have the background/experience to do them. Most recently I had an interview for a VP-level position but didn't get it because I supposedly didn't "fit" what they were looking for. Besides exhibiting "executive presence" and knowing the company/its market, how do you present yourself as a person who can be a leader for the company you are applying with? From what I have been told by friends, you need to sound less like worker (in other words, don't focus on tactics), but on strategies, but that doesn't seem to be enough either.; Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:
Learn what the company's needs are first and foremost in the role. Study their business model and philosophy.

Your friends are right. At the level you're seeking, it's your strategic leadership that will get you to where you want to be. You should be able to speak to campaign strategies you've led; how you've managed the resources -- people and budgets -- for those campaigns; and how you've managed client needs. Moreover, if you're getting interviews ask the first question in the interview: What was it about my qualifications that prompted you to call me in? or What was it about my qualifications you found attractive? That does two things: 1) It tells you what they liked about your resume; and 2) It reminds them why they selected you to interview. At the end of the interview, you should ask Is there anything from our conversation today that would preclude me from returning for the next step in the process? If you asked the initial question at the top of the interview, you can use their points about your strengths to rebut any objections they may have. During the interview, you should share stories about the projects you successfully worked on in the past. These stories should highlight your strategic leadership skills. Good luck.
