Answer:
Your amp is too powerful for the sub. The amp is putting out 500watts RMS into 4ohm mono. The sub handles 400watts RMS. Putting 500watts into a sub that handles 400 watts is a great way to blow it. Don't ever go by "peak" or "max" wattage. That's only what the speaker (or amp) is capable of handling (or producing) for fractions of a second. My suggestion is you buy a 4ohm subwoofer capable of handling 500watts RMS (continuous), or a pair of 2ohm subwoofers that will handle at least 250watts RMS each. Oh, also make sure your amp is set for LOW-pass, not high-pass or full-range. To the other poster that suggested wiring the subs backwards will blow them... That's a first, and I've been installing for over 16 years. The sound quality will suffer greatly because the speaker will be pulling air instead of pushing it, but it won't blow it unless you're bottoming out the voice coil(s).

Ok hope you've got some time... If you only have one subwoofer then bridged mode is fine with this amp..that is actually the ideal/preferred way to run this woofer. With this peticular setup the only 2 things that could be wrong is 1. the speaker wires are switched"POS and NEG are hooked up wrong. which is unlikley..but can happen..the other 2. THIS IS THE BIGGEST REASON WHY!! "CLIPPING" If your lights on your car are dimming this is one obvious sign.... Your cars alternator is manufactured to produce just the power your vehicle needs. With minimum power to spare to extra electronics "AMPS" SO when you run your system hard your vehicle may not be giving the amp the power it feeds for. With kenwood amplifiers "expecially" they have a transformer in them simillar to the one in a door bell. When they dont get the 14.4 volts they ask for they can send 12v current through the amplifier and into your subwoofer coil.. In the struggle for 14.4 volts from your electrical system. and the strain in the amp you can send that 12v surge to your coil..and over not too much time..the coil of your sub will be burned in half. So in conclusion... Kenwood amps are standard for not being the best on the market ..but are CEA compliant power on a budget...however..are some of the worst amps for distortion and clipping when in a bind for power.... if you have anymore ?s please feel free to email me at [email protected] i have won numberous sound competition and would love to help you!!! :)

I worked with a good amount of sound systems and have blown my fair share of Subs (12). The most common problem i saw people doing was reversing the positive and negative. It wont necessarily blow the sub right away but in a few days. Did you correctly ground the wire? Replace your fuse, it may be bad and allowing a power surge. Tweak your amp output. Its a pain but you really cant tell unless your hands on with these things. Good luck.
